The emotional impact of redundancy

‘Your role is now redundant’....

These are the words that nobody really wants to hear.

The heart sinking feeling is met with anger, panic and confusion.

As an Employment Lawyer and HR Consultant, I have delivered this news numerous times and I have always found it the hardest to do. Whether expected or sudden and whether you have worked at an organisation for years or a shorter tenure it still stings ( not to mention that if you have a short tenure you don’t even have the benefit of a redundancy package).

In adversity is opportunity but I do believe the grieving process needs to take place first. Anger, sadness, frustration should be processed and released. You may want to scream into a pillow initially and then journal but talking to someone really helps not only for therapeutic purposes but also to start planning your future.

Once you have let the emotions settle, I would recommend writing down what your heart and soul really desires….this could be the start of a beautiful new journey!
